Useful Historical Atlas Sites
Here’s a list of historical atlas sites that I find quite useful for genealogy:
- Perry-CastaƱeda Library Map Collection - A HUGE collection of historical maps from all over the world.
- Genealogy Atlas - If you love maps then you must see this! You can view the atlases online and also purchase reproductions. Very cool!
- David Rumsey Map Collection - Over 14,800 maps available online. Need I say more?
- Historical Maps of Pennsylvania - Very nice site with a lot of information on old maps of Pennsylvania.
- County Formation in Pennsylvania - This page shows the history of county formation in Pennsylvania.
- Pennsylvania Digital Maps Library - By now you may be getting and idea of where my family lived 200 years ago!
The first three are indispensable for genealogists using maps and atlases for research. The last three have helped me immensely in my own research. If you’ve never used maps for genealogy before, take a look around just for fun. You may just discover something interesting.
