Libraries vs. Internet

I was just reading the Genealogy Blog which referenced an article on 10 Reasons Why the Internet Is No Substitute for a Library and it had me thinking (scary, I know).  I have found a lot of useful information on the internet and it’s always nice to have easy access to things like census records.  When I think about it, though, I have solved more genealogical problems and roadblocks from some obscure books and maps I’ve found in my library’s small genealogy collection than I could ever hope to solve with the internet alone.  Sure, there’s plenty of scanned books available online, but it’s highly doubtful you’re going to find Uncle Bob’s 1893 History of Yankeedoodle County online.

A good example is the 16 volume Mercer County Cemetery Inscriptions books.  Our library has a set (some volumes bound with duct tape) and I was able to find the resting place of my gggg-grandparents.  It even had a hand-drawn map showing how to get there!  There’s all sorts of things like that which you won’t find online.

On the other hand, I’ll never give up the internet, either!

Identity thieves pose as genealogists, steal from dead babies

Stealing from babies is bad enough, but stealing from dead babies?

Thirty-two-year-old Kevin Osbourne, and three others, used the birth certificates of 10 dead babies to create fake driver licences, open banks accounts and get loans worth nearly $30,000.

The police do not know how the men actually decided which identities they would steal. The men posed as authors conducting genealogy research when they applied to district courts around the country for new birth certificates. [Read more]

I never thought genealogy could be so lucrative!  Sure beats dealing with clients…

Still Kickin’!

Wow!  It’s been a while!  A lot has been going on lately and unfortunately I haven’t had much time for genealogy.  I’m in the middle of moving, but as soon as I’m settled in I will be back to boring you to death with new posts.  My motivation has been lacking lately.  Every now and then my enthusiasm for things like genealogy wanes without explanation.  Perhaps burn out?  A few too many sessions scrutinizing census records, maybe?  Who knows…

Anyway, I’ve found some neat stuff while packing and I’ll be sure to let you know about it once I’ve moved.  Stay tuned…

Has he joined his ancestors??

It’s been a while since I’ve made a post, but don’t worry.  I haven’t joined my ancestors at the cemetery just yet!  I’ve been very busy not only with genealogy, but lots of other work.  I don’t know where some bloggers get all their energy, but I’ll be back soon with a bunch of crap you didn’t want to read in the first place!

Genealogy is Good for the Heart!

Researchers at LDS Hospital will launch the Intermountain Genealogical Registry, a lineage-based population database containing the pedigrees of more than 10 million individuals – the largest in the United States – who have lived or whose descendants have lived in the Intermountain region of the United States. The purpose of this groundbreaking new database is to enhance the discovery of genetic factors that contribute to cardiovascular diseases through the study of a large population of patients in which cardiovascular diseases appear to cluster in certain families. Interesting stuff.  I may have to look a little deeper into how genealogy is being used to study genetic diseases.  I never really thought too much about it, but I’m kinda one-dimensional that way…
